. . . . he could remember when a liberal was someone who was generous with his OWN money. Today, everyone’s liberal with everyone else’s—and that’s the topic of today’s column.

I wonder if the Starbucks inside of the VCU library will get closed?
I wonder if my workplace will offer free drink besides coffee or if only that addiction is deemed worthy of corporate sponsorship?
I wonder if the Center Stage/VaPAF/downtown arts center will continue to receive enough city/state/federal tax money to stay open and serve coffee to the rich folks for their opera performances and if the TImes Dispatch will continue to support its public subsidy despite its supposed ‘anti-tax’ stance?
“Sorry for the rant. I just spent the weekend down on the Rappahanock where I’ve been going every summer since 1971 and it’s depressing.’ (R. Smith)
Try the nice, wide part of the Rappahanock that isn’t choked with dumped car tires & beer cans. Its east of the city of Fredericksburg. You should like that section of the Rappahanock better.
Gee, Biscuit . . . you say that like it’s a BAD thing!
All those trendy unemployed baristas will soon be pouring joe at Uncle Smith’s Slave Wage Coffee and Tire Change Emporium.
Mr. Smith will make them work 20 hour days, 7 days a week, wear demeaning ballcaps made from oil, natural gas, and rat feces instead of rainbow colored hemp.
They will only speak when spoken to like all good employees. Sign a paper to agree to vote Republican if they want to keep their jobs.
The coffee will taste like crap but it will be cheaper. Walmart will supply the beans in a complex deal with Arab buyers for the Chinese using Brazilian beans that have been securitized in subprime mortgage instruments underwritten by Bank of America.
Anyone using the words “doppio machiatto” will be shot on sight. All employees will be packing serious hardware of course. No robbing this establishment you worthless punk.
Chai drinkers shot on sight too. Just using the word chai in a sentence calls for shooting them on sight. The only acceptable tea drink will be iced and sweet. Anything else, shot on sight. When in doubt, refer them to management.
Mr. Smith will get ‘em straightened out in no time.
Don’t worry Roy. I’m sure I’ll say something that you disagree with soon enough.
To quote the Starbucks story…
“O’Neill said most of the employees will be moved to nearby stores, but she did not know exactly how many jobs will be lost.”
Well, since paying employee’s is likely one of their major expenses, I doubt those employee’s are going to be moved anywhere except perhaps to the curb.
And I wonder what effect the minimum wage hike had on the decision?
Maybe the democrats need to federalize the trendy coffee bar industry along with health care and energy
Oh dear, RSmith has done it again. He’s gone and posted something that I have to agree with. I HATE it when that happens.
That would be sorta like the bright gummint guys right here in River City who built a big shiny new city hall . . . which shortly began shedding chunks of marble. Compare the OLD city hall.
But then, all too many who are paid by the taxpayers make me think of what my sergeant used to say when some rookie got te ranks wrong: “Don’t call me an ‘officer’; I work for a living!”
But what would happen to those 6 million (union) employee’s????
What about their children? Their pets? Their jet skis? Their retirement at 50 after 20 years of grueling work for the sake of advancing themselves to the next pay grade? Oh...and whatever it was they were hired to do...which many forget 2 years into their employment.
Plus, it would cost billions to retrain them. Their inability to function in a results based environment will have left many azzwidened and unable to cope. Most are unable to perform more than 1.5 hours of actual work per day. (.5 hours if doing it right the first time is a requirement… and .25 if you don’t count organizing for democrat sugar daddies on gov’t time)
Remember, it’s called the Association of Federal State and Municiple Employee’s for a reason! They recognize no distinction between federal, state and local when it comes to looting the treasury. Stealin is stealin. So letting state thieves take it will only lead to fatter state gov’ts.
And what of the politicians who count on the power to skim and redistribute tax money as a way of buying reelection? How will they scratch by? Citizen legislator???PLEASE! Theses no power in that!
Plus, look at all the good the money does. Take West Point. They finally tore down that 30’s era swing bridge and built a shiny new concrete behemoth in it’s place. Now all those people with “RIVAH” stickers on thier SUV’S can zip right thru on their way to destinations across the tidewater region. They put in corny brick sidewalks to give West Point that folksy look they destroyed when they tore down the bridge. Maybe they’ll even Kelo Digg’s Seafood so a developer can build an “authentic” ole Virginia seafood market complete with a great selection of nasty Virginia wine and trinkets for the RIVAH dinks to buy when they go to the Crab Festival to feast on crabs brought in from the gulf because the surrounding rivers have been dregded clean of the local variety.
Sorry for the rant. I just spent the weekend down on the Rappahanock where I’ve been going every summer since 1971 and it’s depressing.
An excellent column, as usual. Thanks, Bart.
I invite others to really consider the consequences of Bart’s sentence…
How much money gets siphoned off for the staffing and overhead required to run the federal programs?
...in light of the what is it, 6 million?, federal employees (not counting the military).
How much good could the state of Virginia do if our citizens paid that money to the state instead of the feds?
