Climate of Hostility (II)
Bart Hinkle

On today’s Op/Ed page, former state climatologist Patrick Michaels brings his A game.

Reader Comments:

Larry,

I don’t care. I’ve been called worse things by people who’s opinion I actully take seriously.

Ed,

I saw that comment. At least the part about her having a nice rack…which she did. Much better than the dusty old hippie chicks that show up at the “breasts not bombs” photo ops.

Hey SMITH! Lay-off Obama. Or you will be branded a jack-booted racist hater.

Mother Earth and the tree fairy earth princess say they are very sad, :(, oh so sad, disappointed in Mr. Smith.

That was one of the funnier links I have seen in a while.

The comments are cute too. One poster looking at the protest photos said asphalt girl has a good rack on her, so asphalt girl fired back with fake outrage and some diatribe about how liberalism is a parasitic infestation that has left Berkeley a shell.

I could not make this stuff up. Some folks have “even” more imagination than I.

I was skimming thru stories of Obama breaking his word on public campaign financing and the democrats threatening to nationalize oil refineries ala Hugo Chavez when I ran across this this photo essay. I’s pretty funny.

That’s how you get 100% concensus in science. You fire the ones that disagree with church doctrine!

On the one hand Mr. Michaels projections are as open to skepticism as those in the other camp, his criticism of Kaine entirely partisan, and his statements don’t paint a full and complete picture.

On the other hand, I like his facts, his basic thinking, his main conclusions.

He says there was little warming in the last decade and little through the middle of the next decade.  That statement could touch off many, many fiercely impassioned letters-to-the-editor about how Gore is a demon from hell and science is a fraud.

The same people who make that statement also state that from the 80s the overall temperature trend is about as expected for warming and this cooling period is just temporary, caused by the AMO cycle of ocean temperatures, but warming will kick in again in 2020. This is all based on computer models, of course, because what else do we have to base it on ?  Mr. Michaels did not say this. Why confuse an already confused public with more and more debateable facts.

I think he just points to all the political problems surrounding the warming debate. Kaine has to pay lip service to global warming because that is a Democrat agenda item. It does not mean there is any real appetite for doing anything.  Kaine is a political animal so I’m quite certain he will have a commission if one is called for if only for appearances.

In fact, blue ribbon commissions are often used as a political ploy to appease the public without really doing anything except publishing 200 page reports outlining gibberish and bullshit.  The 9/11 commission might be an exception, but not entirely.

Mr. Michaels is naive to believe the public is interested in his numbers. The public is only interested in taking sides, arguing, and goofy conspiracies. The lack of interest in hard climatology, much less all the complex political implications of science, would be enough to make one despair.
