C’mon, Admit It
Bart Hinkle
March 22, 2007 2:00 PM

A recent conversation—the identities of the participants will be held confidential—turned to the subject of bad music. The question was raised, “What song are you most embarrassed to admit you like?“ Answers included “She Works Hard for the Money” by Donna Summer, “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC, and “Come on, Eileen” by Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

Britney Spears also came up.

And now the question turns to you, dear reader: What do you listen to under the covers at night?

C’mon—‘fess. It’s good for the soul.

Update: My own guiltiest pleasure probably is “Cruisin’,“ by Michael Nesmith. You probably know it as the song about Lucy and Ramona and their brother Sunset Sam.

Reader Comments:

The once labelled, whipmy music in the early 70’s, which I professed to despise as a teenager, (to protect the macho image) has done a damn 180 degrees & now is my favorite staple. 1)Bread 2)America 3)Seals & Crofts 4)Jackson Browne’s Late for the Sky.  Who woulda’ thunk it!

Enjoy it;

A bit off topic: One of the nicest gifts I have received is an mp3 with headphones. Being hard of hearing, I can now enjoy my music, even on the patio, without disturbing the neighbors with its volume. Something to think about for elderly relatives, especially if you can find some old music they like. How about “Summertime Blues”.

My great-grand-baby loves to march around the living room with me, broom stick gun on shoulder, to “The Battle of New Orleans” and “Sink the Bismark”. I stand accused of corrupting their musical tastes. Guilty. Love North to Alaska, Johnny Reb, Please Mr. Custer, Balad of the Green Berets.

...Johnny Horton…

They ran to the briars and they ran to the brambles,
And they ran to the bushes where a rabbit couldn’t go.
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn’t catch them,
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

Dichelle, I followed your link and liked Saftey Dance, too. Anyone for a little Sam Cooke or Johnny Horton? “Searchin’” and “Love Potion #9” are all time goodies. Roger Millers zany songs still lift spirits.

Dichelle,

Don’t forget “Our House” for some reason I always put that song and “Safety Dance: together.

My secret? OK, here goes…

John Denver.

Genesis, Yes, and (early, early) Deep Purple. Thoughtfully constructed music.

Wow, I think a lot of what’s been mentioned is pretty good music (there’s a reason people are still listening to AC/DC!).  My confession is that I love The Carpenters.  Yep, gotta admit it.  And here’s one to make you laugh… I love “Safety Dance” by Men in Hats.  And I just found out that I can get it as a ringtone on my cell phone—no kidding—how hysterical!!!!!  I think I can post this link (some ringtone site): http://phonezoo.com/Men-in-Hats-Safety-Dance___YG_gYiuh4CM___Ringtone.htm
just in case you never heard it, or did but forced yourself to forget it!  LOL!

I’m a bit like R. Smith in that regard - I listen to a lot of stuff.  I tend to lean towards heavy metal/hard rock, but in my daily driver you’ll find about 100 CDs including bluegrass (Slack Family band - local greats; if you haven’t caught them you owe yourself - ditto for Page Wilson and Reckless Abandon), Johnny Cash, The Brian Setzer Orchestra; Mozart, The Best of Queen (they so rocked), ELO (they could rock too); all of which keeps company with the entire Metallica discography, Static X, Tool, Led Zep, Ozzy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Disturbed, and more recently, Muse’s “Black Holes and Revelations” - a really good CD.

OK - another I’ll sheepishly admit: Evanescence.
