Tomorrow’s column will discuss the issue. The photos below make up something of a compare-and-contrast essay on the subject, in pictures.

The person responsible for the dog in the third picture should be horse-whipped then drenched in alcohol! Feeling bloodthirsty from this worthless persons cruelty? You bet!!
The treatment of humans vs. dogs is very typical of a society that has lost all perspective on values and standards. Mistreatment of animals is not the issue, instead it is the ludicrous idolization of dogs by humans. It is wrong to mistreat an animal, but at the same time it is more wrong to treat human beings as villains if the choice is dog worship or dog control. Our society has lost its way when it comes to dogs.
The callous attitudes I am seeing on here make me so damn mad I could chew nails! WHAT is wrong with you people?
Animals are helpless, defenseless creatures who depend on us for their very lives. Theses pictures make me want to beat the devil out of somebody! My pets have always been treated like one of the children and that’s the way I felt about them. It is inconcievable to me that anyone should want to harm one or simply shrug so indifferently and act as though their pain does not matter because they are not human! I’ve know dogs that far exceeded humans in their characters.
If you mistreat an animal, you should go to jail until you learned to respect all life.
I sincerely hope you guys don’t have any pets!
I look forward to the column Bart. I personally have a difficult time with animals being chained—you certainly wouldn’t find me chaining one. But in the case of apartment communities — where neighbors have a right not be jumped-on by someone’s hairy, slobbering pet — the answer is not so easy.
This is clearly a job for Governor Kaine…
I agree with your post Patrick and I would go on to say that punishment for cruelty to animals should be harsh with fines and public service but no human should loose their freedom and be jailed for neglecting an animal.
If they use an animal to break laws like attacking other people or dog fighting etc, then jail time is reasonable.
But I have seen some people be arrested on animal planet shows because they didnt provide health care or enough food for animals.
To me taking away a persons freedom for not feeding a cat is wrong.
If cases like this turn up then animal control should just remove the animal and fine the owner or make them serve weekends at an spca caring for animals.
Some citys have whole departments that ressemble the police dept.
The animal control people carry hancuffs, mace, and, and a pistol just like police officers when they go out and make an arrest for crimes against animals.
In the city of Richmond the animal control people cant even tranquilize an animal or carry any weapon that may injure the animal.
They have to try and lasso the animal peacfully.
Whats wrong with that picture?
Humans may be shot, hancuffed, maced, and tazzered, but for goodness sake do not hurt the animal under any circumstance.
That money should be spent solving/preventing human on human crime.
Some day the human beings will revolt against the dog and cat aristocracy to free themselves from worshiping at Pet Mart. Cruelty has no place regarding any living thing. But dogs and cats are like a plague on society—there are simply too many of them. Instead of finding homes for strays, sick, etc. dogs, we should be putting them to sleep and neutering all dogs.
BTW, there is absolutely no reason to own a Rottweiler or Pit Bull.
I can’t believe someone stood callously by taking a picture and watched that vicious pitbull eat that baby’s arm (last picture).
Please tell me that baby was put down once its arm was declared useless.
Seriously though, I am looking forward to some strong statements about cruelty to animals in our local area (where were these pictures taken?).
It should be illegal to keep a dog without fenced property.
Minimum 1/8 acre to roam.
Like I said, we will all, one day, be judged by how well we treat our dogs.
