The New York Times Magazine has an interesting profile of Virginia Congressman Tom Davis—who says, of Republicans after eight years of George W.,
If we were a dog food, they would take us off the shelf.

Mr. Smith,
You struggle to find excuses for the inexcusable.
Calling NoVa “communist country” is inexcusable but it does come straight out of that GOPAC memo from 1996.
It does not matter what associations Obama might have had that might have some relevance today, or what associations the Obama camp can dig up on McCain that may or may not have relevance today.
The bottom line is that the “communist country” tag is inexcusable tactic on the national level. From someone like you, a bit more understandable, allowable. From the GOP in general, not right.
Basic morality Roger. There is a right. There is a wrong. Do not get them confused.
You do not systematically set out to smear, lie, slander, and distort your way into the White House. That isn’t right.
Blaming “attack politics” on republicans is exactly the kind of mentality that drives people to relect Jefferson and Stevens. And when you carve away all the BS, republicans at least have a reason for attacking…that being that the journalists who are supposed to report the truth about candidates are instead corrupt to the core and doing everything possible to shield Obama and attack his critics.
I read a good line this morning…if the press seems to think knowing what magazines Palin reads is critical…could’nt they at least get off their kness long enough to dig into Obama’s associations with terrorists, communists and race baiting fascists?
Obviously not…so the republicans have no choice but to attack.
If we had a reputable press that actually informed peple instead of acting as propaganda ministries for the Great Leader…none of this would be nesassary.
Good point. Don’t know if that is true or not but a good observation and certainly something I have noticed too.
Doonesbury (all the best information is in the comics section) was saying there was some kind of GOPAC memo put out by Gingrich back in 1996 that was the “Magna Carta of attack politics”.

Expect to see a lot of it tonight, even some from Obama probably.
We might blame it all on Karl Rove but he is only the soldier, the enforcer, the capo is Gingrich.
Ronald Reagan was the last great Republican, in my opinion. He was the best. Reagan was gung-ho FOR things. By contrast, I never liked this spiteful 1990s neo-con bunch. They’ve always been AGAINST things. Namely people.
And its coming back to haunt them now, isn’t it?
There has always been an oft-noticed disconnect between public perception of the policies of a party and the leaders themselves.
Polls on Bush and the GOP are negative but McCain is still in the race and party support for both Bush and his policies is skyhigh.
People just don’t connect up the dots.
People think Congress is corrupt and dysfunctional but those same people support their own Congressman or woman to a fault. My guy is not corrupt, your guy is corrupt. The other guy is corrupt.
In today’s paper, the Congressman Jefferson of freezer fame has won a primary and the Senator Stevens of condo-to-nowhere fame is still running for office and expected to win. Why ?
Just human nature to disconnect your candidate, who you like personally, from his nefarious policies and activities which cause you problems.
Yeah…I know…republicans suck. I mean it. They need to have their heads dooshed out good and get back to arguing for limited gov’t and personal responsibility. Trying to be “not as bad as democrats” won’t work.
Having said that…here’s an EXCELLENT piece by Victor Davis Hanson about exactly why electing Obama will be a step backwards…the institutionalization of black racism and a total and complete abandonment of liberal principles by the power hungry left.

Good article. Tom Davis is like McCain, one can’t be sure he will vote with the GOP. He is needed in the GOP although I disagree with some of his positions. Unfortunately, the GOP has not had a good leader since Newt.
