Fraud Squad

Two items about voter fraud today:

(1) James Taranto has a telling rundown of shenanigans by A.C.O.R.N. in Nevada, Ohio, etc.

(2) Hans Bader questions the ACLU’s assertions about election law and student registrations. He links to a pretty damning (if true!) comment in the Virginian-Pilot. The retort to that is noting the plural of anecdote is not data. The rebuttal to the retort is to refer the reader back to the Taranto compilation above.

Reader Comments:

More lies by those darn GOPers. He took full responsibility, what more do the hated Republicans want? He is in full compliance with the Clinton Doctrine of personal behavior. Get off his back:
“PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Democratic U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney on Tuesday admitted causing “embarrassment and heartache” in his marriage but denied paying hush money to a former aide to be quiet about an affair.

He did not directly address the purported tryst, but instead issued a statement taking “full responsibility for my actions and the pain I have caused my wife Terry and my daughter Bailey.“

“No marriage is perfect,“ Mahoney said, “but our private life is our private life, and I am sorry that these allegations have caused embarrassment and heartache.“

The statement came one day after ABC News reported on its Web site that Mahoney had an affair with an aide and then paid her $121,000 to keep her quiet and avoid a sexual harassment lawsuit.

An interview that has a different take on what ACORN has been up to - you can listen to it.
http://talknationradio.com/?p=175

and if you want to know more about acorn from a former organizer, read this -

but that is only if you are open to seeing ACORN as a beneficial organization.

No question that no one should be allowed to vote—or have drivers’ licenses—in two jurisdictions simultaneously.  There are already laws prohibiting this.  Some people need to go to jail.
OTOH, this isn’t a new issue—it’s been around for decades.  Where do students vote?  Here’s what I wrote in response to a similar question posed on the Green and Civil Liberties Alliance lists.
The idea is that if you should vote wherever “home” is.  If you’re just in town to attend school, but “home” is where your folks live, then you should cast your vote there (possibly by absentee ballot).  OTOH, if you’ll be sticking around after school is out, then probably you should vote at the school town.
Encouraging students to vote is a great idea; enabling to vote more than once is a terrible idea.  Simple concepts.  Accept them.

Hey Bob, from ACORN’s President:
“ACORN has registered over 1.3 million voters. Over 60% are people of color. This is a horrifying development for Republicans and the McCain campaign.

...the rabid hysteria by the right wing over this issue can only mean one thing -cover for their own crimes to steal this election.

We all know the drill - cry registration fraud while systematically purging millions of voters from the voter rolls, throwing out votes in African American areas, running campaigns to suppress voter turnout through various deceptive and illegal means.

And the raid on the ACORN offices is undoubtedly a continuation of one of the US Attorney Gate scams, bogus prosecutions for the bogus voter fraud claim…I’m no Poblano. But my win-o-meter has never been wrong in a presidential election - until 2000 and 2004. I have said for months now, if Obama loses this election, it will be because the Republicans stole it…

And ACORN is doing a damn good job. ...
And the final fact: Republicans hate democracy.“

Regardless of your personal beliefs, do you really think these people have your best interests in mind? A racist motivated site, similar to KKK.

OK, Bill, go back and read the Hans Bader post.It has to do with the questioning of true domicile of students, always a tricky question. If Falwell, jr. wants to register his students en masse, he is running into the same questions as Obama and the ACLU.
And, what if Trani at VCU advocated bloc voting for a certain canidate ?
As far as Republicans wanted to suppress the vote of certain groups, pardon my cynicism, but I will stand by that statement. If Republicans are so civic minded to register people, why are not they out registering people in say, Gilpin Court?
And as far as ACORN, at first glance, it appears they have been at times slipshod. But what about those millions they registered above board ? A little scared , Bill ?
Besides Bill, if ACORN had registered Republicans, you would be defending ACORN
to the last registration.
Their running dogs in Fox News, MedIA General, ect. , the loons at Palin rallies , are just throwing out ACORN, Bill Ayers and the other Sift Boat stuff because Mc Cain is choking.
Oh, by the way, Bill, I am not a registered Democrat. In fact in the last Governor’s election, I voted for Potts who ran as an Independent.

Hey Greta, nice try. However NObama is made of teflon. It matters not who he knows, associates, financing, etc. since the public worships the messiah.

ACORN is wrong and stupid and got caught.
Barack Obama has close ties to them that go way back.
That makes political hay.
Didn’t Papa Kennedy buy an entire state in the 60s?
Anyone citizen of the peoper age who is not a felon can register and vote. Just once though. Aye there’s the rub….

“ Jerry Falwell, Jr. over at Liberty University has stated his intrest in registering his 10,000 students to vote as a bloc for Mc Cain.“

How is this in any way fraudulent?  As long as they are of legal voting age and eligible to vote, and choose to vote for McCain, what’s wrong with him getting them registered to vote?

“And I am sure there are Republican attempts at voter suppression out there.“

How about you find some and link it rather than just making a bare allegation based on nothing more than supposition?

“Republicans in Michigan have had a big campaign to convince those who have had foreclosed homes that they can not vote.“

Wrong.  That is a false statement.  The Republican party has a list of foreclosed houses and is using it to make sure people do not register to vote FROM THAT ADDRESS.  I.e., if the house has been foreclosed and it is sitting empty; nobody living there, then there should not be anyone registering to vote with that address.  Voters can be challenged if there is a reasonable basis to believe the person is not eligible to vote.  Election law makes provisions for the challenge and for dealign with such a challenge.  If it turns out the person legitimately is living at that address (e.g., he is in foreclosure but has negotiated with the bank to continue living there or something), the person should be allowed to vote.

By the way, the implicit argument here is that only people who would vote Democrat are having their homes foreclosed upon.  Otherwise, why would the assertion be made that Republicans are “fraudulently” trying to “bully” voters into not voting?

Seems to me all they’re doing is being on high alert to PREVENT fraudulent voting by people using false addresses.
