Via Andrew Sullivan, author of The Conservative Soul: How We Lost It; How to Get It Back. The graph represents the growth of congressional earmarks, commonly known as pork. There was a time when conservatism was synonymous with limited government and frugality. That reputation now lies in tatters.

Let me know when you are ready to discuss the Virginia Performing Arts Foundation- including Sen. Allen earmarks for it and the Times Disgrace’s own corporate donations- at the same time it cut back on its arts coverage.
Let me know when you want to look at the political affiliations of the locals who pushed for raising the City’s meals tax- including your own editorial board.
You point out, Bart, that “conservativism” no longer goes by its literal definition.
Unlike Andrew Sullivan, I cannot suggest how real conservatives can get their domain back. But I can tell you how to become a 21st-century conservative—its easy:
1. State a hatred for homosexuals.
2. State a hatred for Asians.
3. Call everybody (but yourself) a criminal.
Presto! You’re now a conservative! (Lesson provided by Jorge Allinn, Kerry Jilgore and Blenn Geck)
Bart:
You’re the best in the business. I have the utmost respect for you. But, for the love of God don’t ever quote Andrew Sullivan when making a point about conservatism again. He’s the kind of guy who has been, at one time or another, on every side of every issue - at least once.
Keep up the great work.
Jerry
