First the Virginia GOP gave the commonwealth “macaca” and the marriage amendment.
Then Virgil Goode’s comments on immigration.
And now this:
How far do these calls for apologies go, wondered [Delegate Frank] Hargrove, a member of the House Rules Committee that could take up McEachin’s resolution as early as Wednesday.
“Are we going to force the Jews to apologize for killing Christ?“ Hargrove wondered. . . .
“I personally think that our black citizens should get over it,“ Hargrove said of slavery, which existed in Virginia from 1619 until the Civil War. “By golly, we’re living in 2007.“
(Hat tip: The Richmond Democrat—relying on, one must note, the mainstream media.)
There might be one or two minorities Virginia Republicans haven’t insulted yet. But give them time.
“By golly, we’re living in 2007,“ Hargrove says. If that’s the case, then a lot of his colleagues never got the memo.

In All Seriousness, part II:
What the Virginia Republican Party needs is a C.E.O. The person who calls ‘em all to the board room to say, “Ok, look. This is the plan. THIS is the way we are going to do it. And if any of you don’t think you can follow along, then leave now. Get out and find yourself another party.“
If the VA GOP has a leader, I don’t know about it. The party seems to be a scattered, disarranged bunch of loose cannons.
Overzealous prosecutors out to make a name for themselves are the best argument against the death penalty I know
Since we’re all having a go at it: Hargrove called African-Americans in Virginia “Our black citizens.“
As in belonging to a master.
More than likely, though, Hargrove was trying to say “Mohawk” and it just came out the wrong way. That’s probably it. Either that or his son stole the password to his computer and typed the phrase behind his back.
We got some real beuts here alright.
But in all seriousness—I’m not sure how anyone can expect any different from an elderly, caucasian man who spent his formative years in a segregated society. The same man who, in the early-1980s, called for a return to public lynchings.
I’m not sure how anybody could have expected an outcome different from that.
Well, O.K.,now, lets just give in to our paranoia and fear, fill the moat, lower the drawbridge and keep ourselves isolated and safe.
We have already shrugged off Executive incursions on our civil liberties and privacy, torture, rendition, intelligence reports twisted to say what the Boss wanted them to say, prisoners, “suspected of something” held for years without charges,a decline of respect for America by the entire world, a total disregard of the public will, so sure, what’s a little discrimination against Muslims if it makes you feel safer? Just how far are we willing to go in our betrayal of everything we stand for? When did America turn into a quivering bowl of Jello?
Wow.
The team coach was fired, the season cancelled, 88 professors took out an add in the local paper thanking your “community” for calling on the players to be castrated. A crooked DA hyped racial hatred to get elected. All before any actual facts were known.
And you see this as a just reaction.
If there is any justice, Duke University will be sued, those faculty members will be fired and the woman exposed to the eternal scorn of the entire nation. I doubt any of this will happen because the system is rigged in their favor but, one thing is for sure, the mask is off as far as our universites are concerned. These junk scholars stand exposed as frauds and fakes. The administration…cowards. Duke is now a punch line…the Al Sharpton of the Ivy League. They, and anyone who agrees with them, deserve our scorn and contempt.
And hiding behind crimes committed 40 years ago to justify current hatred only draws attention to the fact that you are no different than the people who committed them then.
As a member of the Duke community, I can say that given the circumstances the reaction was just. The larger lesson is how the legal system can be abused and how citizens can be denied their rights; whether it be the right to a fair trial of the right to vote (which thanks to the mindest of some, didn’t really happen until 1964).
Reminding our citizens of our heritage and missteps as a nation is not living in the past, it’s reflecting no how we can have a more just future.
Margie,
Tolerence is a 2 way street. I’ve said it more times than I care to count…when Americas self described defenders of free will, free speech and secular gov’t heap the same amount of scorn and contempt on islam as they do christianity, then your point might gain some legitimacy. And you might want (actually, I doubt you do)to look at whats going on in France, Britain and the Netherlands. It took a generation, not 400 years, for unchecked immigration to create the mini Islamist states within these countries. There are now areas of Paris where the police simply refuse to go for fear of being attacked.
And here in this country, every time the media trots out a supposedly “moderate” muslim, within weeks he (it’s never a she) pops up on the net in a video screeching about jew monkey pigs and glorious jihad. Even Barbara Boxer withdrew an award given to one of these “moderates” after learning of his associations with fanatics. And Boxer is about as “progressive” as they come.
Everyone knows the threat is out there. Why is it that not a single media entity dared show the danish muhammad cartoons? Sure, we all heard the bulls**t about tolerence and such but, coming from organizations that can’t wait to show us pictures of Jesus in piss or the Virgin Mary with elephant crap at her feet, this newfound appreciation for religious sensitivity rings a bit hollow. They didn’t show them because they were scared. They sat on their hands and pretended not to notice the death threats, fatwas and riots because they were scared. Now why is that?
Nostalgic visions of happy immigrants passing in front of the Statue of Liberty are cute but, they don’t apply in this era.
In, say, three or four hundred years when Muslim legislators outnumber Christians enough to push through legislation harming women’s rights, you’ll find my decendents on here yelling about it. But first they will have to get around the Consitution, the President and the Supreme Court. If they manage all that, then the will of the people will have prevailed, won’t it?
Mr. Goode was way out of line! We still have religious freedom in this country, even for Americans who embrace the Muslim faith, as long as they don’t use violence to try to force their religion on someone else. Whether politicians use the Koran, the Holy Bible, or the Sears-Robuck cataloge in a private swearing-in ceremony falls under the heading of their own darn business.
No. I’ve never even heard of that paper. But if you’d like, I’ll go ahead and defend him here. Or you can just go ahead and call me an ignorant bigot now. That will keep you from having to actually discuss the issue of being a devout muslim in a society that supposedly values free will. You won’t have to discuss arranged marraiges, views on gays, anti semitism, womens rights or any of the other issues concerning Islam in America.
You will leave feeling smugly superior. The issue will continue to fester and future generations will have to deal with it. Just like they did with slavery.
