The Richmond school board deserves extended applause for having the courage to give the Patrick Henry charter-school proposal the green light. Voting yes shouldn’t be seen as an indication that the board thinks Patrick Henry will outperform other city schools. It is merely a recognition that the group should be given the chance to try. The School Board isn’t declaring a winner in the race; it’s just allowing another entrant at the starting line.
Now, of course, the charter-school group has to deliver on its implicit promises. It better. A lot of people will be watching—and a fair proportion of them will be opponents of innovation who hope that the School Board has just given the charter-school movement enough rope to hang itself.

It is APALLING that the NAACP is so strongly opposed to this movement. About 80% of the students in the PH area are black and would benefit from the charter school. I have zero respect for the NAACP. I guess they have to keep black folk down in order to survive as an organization. I mean, once inequality is gone, the NAACP won’t be needed anymore, right? Mr. King Salim Khalfani obviously doesn’t want the NAACP to become a “fait accompli.”
