What is the threat posed by a minute group of virulent haters?

Sunday’s Washington Post had an interesting article about how Barack Obama’s candidacy has proven a useful recruiting tool for racist hate groups. They’ve enjoyed a real spike in applications and activity. That’s alarming.

Or is it? As some of the leaders of the white-power movement admit, they’re not exactly on par with the NRA or the AARP, numbers-wise:

Such groups have historically inflated their influence for self-promotion and as an intimidation technique, and they refused to provide exact membership numbers or open their meetings to a reporter. Leaders acknowledged that their numbers remain very small—“the flat-globe society still has more people than us,“ Roper said. But experts said their claims reveal more than hyperbole this time.

Yet their existence, and growth, is useful for those at the diametrical opposite end of the spectrum as well: If the threat of neo-Nazis and white supremacists seems to be growing, that’s a powerful recruiting and fundraising tool for organizations such as the Southern Poverty Law Center.

In some ways the situation seems to have some parallels to the debate over Islamic radicalism and the threat of jihad. There are those who contend the Bush administration has exaggerated the threat from Islamofascism for its own political ends. Just how big is the threat—from white supremacists or islamofascists—in actuality?

In each case you’ve got a bunch of angry young men (and some women) and a lot of websites spewing vitriol by the bucketful. But how many of those who hang out on the fringes of the movement are motivated enough to carry out—let alone competent enough to carry out—a serious plot?

Then again, how many does it take to carry out a serious plot?

On 9/11, it took only a couple of dozen.

In the Oklahoma City bombing, it took only a couple of persons.

My theory is that the reason the UK blogs are so “opinionated” is twofold:

First, the Brits tend to be “opinionated” people. Second, more important, all those migrants who are poorly assimilated and have no jobs are spending their time on the internet.

Oh, and they aren’t happy campers. It isn’t “fake” hate.

The standard issue limey you think you are talking to might not be so standard.

I have encountered a few evangelical nutjobs over here in the New World. They think they are doing God’s work when they only parrot the most extreme ideas that they have obviously never examined or entertained for themselves.

Then there are the liberal twentysomethings who sound glibly intelligent, but just how intelligent can they possibly be if they live in their parent’s basement, drink Red Bull, never read a paper, never pay a bill, and wait for graduate school to deliver them from their Playstations.

The internet is positively glowing radioactive with people who have too much time on their hands and benefit enormously from anonymity.

How do we know the editorial staff of the T-D is not the advance wave of the Gornoxdungian planetary invasion fleet ?  Ok. I seriously need to get out of the basement.

And cut way back on the Red Bull.

By the way, all joking aside, Obama might be some token carefully groomed for success, but then so was Marcus Aurelius.

What really counts is your ability. Obama taught law at Univ Chicago. Only an adjunct appointed by his wife, but still you have to really dig deep into smearland to say the man has no ability. Now George W, no need to go beyond the facts to nail him. Obama, no way.

Just as W was the son of a famous father, so too junior reminds me of the son of Marcus Aurelius. Emperor Commodus, who succeeded his father, spent the Roman Empire into rack and ruin, was a terrible administrator, and pretended to be a gladiator for the sake of the photo-op. 

Who does that remind you of ?

The only fighting leftists do is from behind the protection of a police barricade.

And what history really tells us is that it’s leftist idiocy that leads to the rise of right wing movements. Something about being chained up to a tree with a stale bowl of peoples water and some 3 day old revolutionary sawdust chow…which is where leftism ALWAYS ends up…it makes people a little uneasy.

Except in Europe. They get their water changed daily.

Another factor overlooked and most likely the most important is that recession also causes white extremist growth. A Saulk Alinsky maxim was the “the action is in the reaction “.
Americans, whose historical memory is generally short, do remember WW II, the Nazis , the genocide of the Jews, ect.
When the nutjobs arise from the extreme right, they will not find the soil in America very fertile. In the past, the rise in extremism has been met with fierce opposition from communities, law enforcement, anti-racist monitoring groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center, leftist groups. Its a great oppurtunity for the Left at the expense of the right. Even “respectable racists” will take a stand against the Klan.

Historically, there were massive spikes in membership in 1922, 1965 and 1979-1980. Ok, the reason for the 1965 spike should be obvious—but you might be scratching your head at 1922 & 1979-1980. If so, then you need to go back & re-take a middle-school history course. Or something.

As R. Smith pointed out: If angry vitriol is considered ‘healthy dialogue’ when coming from that loony Chicago church, then it is equally acceptable when coming from fringe white groups. This is not only a part of Americana, but is also part of the fabric of many many industrialized nations. What the heck.

David Axelrod is on the job. His manufactured product is beginning to fray around the edges. Time for some massive damage control.

Obama is the result of a lifetime of grooming minor black politicians for mayoral and gubernatorial posts. Deval Patrick gov. of Mass. came closest. Until he screwed up big time.

He was replete with the same inspirational speeches and even the same rousing “Yes we can” slogan.

Obama was plucked from the dumpster politics in Chicage by Axelrod and due to a series of “lucky breaks” and contributions by big donors like George Soros (yes he is there on the rolls along with his whole family in Obama’s race for the Senate) rolled into the Illinois Senate.

He comes by his socialism honestly. Both his parents were communist sympathizers. Before anyone wants to shout me down. Check out his father’s paper on socialism in Kenya. It was excellent and favored a more communistic approach to African socialism. His mothers papers, what there are of them leave no doubt as to her political agenda.

Mr. Obama’s voting record might reveal like leanings except that he rarely voted. There is no paper trail that would help one come to any conclusion as to where his “convictions” lay.

I have not found the racist, white supremist bloc on my travels around the web. I have found though a very disturbing anti-American element that is growing by the day. The blame America for everything cabal. This is not the usual ignorant ranting. This is a sort of supercilious sneering a la the French at their worst. Like they have joined some exclusive club. They use phrases like “false patriotism” and “jingoism” and voting against your best interests. I think they are a sinister bunch.

I have lived in many places in the world and I know the difference first hand between the real freedoms that we have in this country and the phony facades of
multiculturism that they tout especially in the EU.

They just shove all those free roaming immigrants into ghettos outside the big cities like London and Paris. The keep them quiet with hand outs and turn a blind eye to the gang culture. In fact I have even seen the recent spate of knifings in London blamed on American TV shows and movies. If you have the stomach for it and not done so already check out some of the UK blogs especially those relating to the recent knifings.

Anyway, perhaps we should put David Axelrod on the ballot. We could still have a first. The first Jewish American President from Brooklyn!!!

Not all hate groups are created identical. We are fairly certain that al-Qaida, with known cells, known weapons, known funds, known networks, pretty much a solid threat, quantifiable.

And it would be a lot easier for the media to gin up fears of a klan revival if Obama’s team would do a better job hiding his racist, jew hating, communist and anti christian base from his official campaign website.

The only thing rising faster than white racism are media attempts to insulate Obama from his own ignorant and bigoted supporters , an association he has still yet to explain. Not that anyone is going to push the point.

He made a speech on race. A SPEECH on race!!!! It was dreamy.

Oh…and now he’s subtly injecting a little liberal syle race baiting into his campaign appearences…when he,s not busy breaking campaign finance pledges
