Touching—and True

One of the downsides of the Internet is the amount of pure bilge that gets handed around in the modern-day equivalent of the “Telephone” game. Fortunately, it’s not that hard to investigate the glurge that floods the inbox. And once in a while, the stories and pictures check out.

Like this one:

The text reads:

Air Force Chief Master Sgt. John Gebhardt, of the 332nd Expeditionary Medical Group at Balad, Iraq, cradles a young girl as they both sleep in the hospital. The girl’s entire family was executed by insurgents; the killers shot her in the head as well. The girl received treatment at the U.S. military hospital in Balad, but cries and moans often. According to nurses at the facility, Gebhardt is the only one who can calm down the girl, so he has spent the last several nights holding her while they both sleep in a chair.

You can read an update of the touching story at the urban-legend reference site Snopes.com.

p.s.—You might already have received this in an e-mail with the message, “Why isn’t this all over the news? If he had done something wrong, it surely would be!“ That, sadly, is also all too true. Fewer than a half-dozen news sources carried the story about Gebhardt.

“Let freedom reign”

Brovo! I wholeheartedly applaud your sentiments if not your conclusions.

When I look at that photo I am reminded of why we went to Iraq in the first place.
Freedom!
We can spin this war all we want to but in the end 10yrs 50ys or even 100yrs from now all of the history books will call this war operation Iraqi freedom.

And on that day when freedom comes to the middle east [and it surely will] 10yrs 50yrs or even 100yrs from now everyone will look back into history to see where that first spark of freedom came from.

History will record those who fought and sacrificed for freedoms sake.

History will also record those people who opposed the cause and the price of this struggle for others to have freedom.

All of the finest lawyers, news groups, or liberal think tanks will never be able to change the name of our mission “operation Iraqi freedom” to any other name, like “operation find WMD” or “operation blunder”.

I am thankful that there has not ever been a force in this world that could hold back the human desire to be free, and the forces in America today that are opposed to that human desire for freedom that has been ignited in Iraq today will also fail in the end.

I may not be here to see that day first hand.
But make no mistake…..that day will surely come!

Let freedom reign!

Anyone know what the Times Disgrace rules are?

Keep in mind, the TD is having a ‘Public Square’ meeting on their political coverage on Feb. 28.

Thanks,
Scott

Thats funny!!!

I find the same reaction from people when I express faith that there is a God, and most times I get a few heckles thrown at me to boot.

Anyway, I wasnt trying to pry into your life, I just notice an inconsistancy in your writtings and you have explained well enough why.

May I say… “May God Bless you” with out offending anyone? LOL!!!

I am happy for anyone who has the comfort of faith, especially in life-threatening situations or incarcerated. Or those who have hit bottom and have no place else to draw the strength they need to get up and try life again.

I hesitate to say this, because I don’t wish to offend, but it seems like a delusion to me, a need for feeling that something larger than ourselves is in charge of this crazy world. I read somewhere that if there was no God, mankind would have to invent one. I’m afraid that he has, over and over in every culture. You could take this as indicating universal truth or universal need. I reserve judgement. I hesitate to discuss religion because of the reaction I get. People actually move away from you as though they think you are about to get struck down by lightening any minute if you express any doubt about the existence of God. Superstitious fear.

I am sorry that your brother defined God in that way to you.

And if you go in the exact opposite way because of your upbringing, others have still has defined God for you.

I am glad to hear that you do have faith in mankinds goodness, and its that same faith that I have in God.
Mine is nothing more or bigger than yours!

Faith is faith!

If you have a little you have enough!

I encourage you to seek Gods definition of himself for you.

There are people in lonely places, that if not for God they wouldnt have anything.
I wouldnt want to ever end up there again.

Not at all. I may not can share your beliefs, but I am not touchy about discussing them.

There is room for faith in one sense for me. If I did not have faith in the basic goodness of human beings, I would want to retreat to a mountaintop somewhere. One place I break with religion: I do not accept that man is born evil and spents his life fighting it. Just the opposite.

I was reared in the Baptist church, with a preacher brother, and an itenirant hell and brimstone grandfather. Boy, could he scare the socks off you! At any rate, you never quite leave early childhood teachings behind and in times of sorrow or stress, I find my self praying to the God I’m not convinced is there. Nevertheless, it is conforting. I envy the people who REALLY believe.

Hope I didnt overstep?

Isnt there any room for faith to go along with emotions and facts?

Posted by Rick on 02/20 at 06:29 PM

Careless use of phrases. I neither believe or disbelieve. The woman ruled by emotions is waiting for facts. I’m not able to take something that fantastic on faith. Neither would I ever want to make light of someone elses.

Do you beleive in heaven Margie?

I thought I read earlier that you werent a religious person.

Sorry if I am mistaken.
Sincerely…Rick
