It’s mostly speculation at this point. But one never knows, does one?
A 3-year-old of our acquaintance, who still is grappling with the rules governing the first and second person possessive, refers to the grocery chain as “Mykrop’s.” A lot of Richmonders with fond feelings for the company clearly feel the same.
Of course, there’s also the Ukrop’s Sucks Brigade, which seethes because Ukrop’s sells no booze, and it closes on Sunday, and they mounted a campaign to run Howard Stern outta here a few years ago. Stern shot back by calling the Ukrops “baby killers” (because they sell cigarettes).
Hard to know which side would feel more bereft if the Ukrop’s chain were no more.

Hey people, including Bobby Soxer, Ukrops is a capitalist and is morally corrupt. It deserves to go out of business for making too much money—remember the poor get poorer and the rich get richer. Just ask Biscuit and Bobby.
Donations, sponsorship, UR support, etc. are phony attempts to coverup the malicious goals of earning a profit. Think of all the people on North Ave. who don’t have any money! So there!
Richmonders just ain’t hardcore business people. They do what they can, for as long as they can—but when the heat gets hot they say, ‘Ah well, better just settle back with the family while there’s time.’
And that’s the quick overall picture of what’s actually going on with Ukrops. Its really simple to see. I don’t believe there’s anything more to it than that.
Ukrops as a store, I do not care for. Price. However, they do offer decent customer service, well stocked aisles, variety ect. It is particuarily better than the Food Dog but Food Dog has better prices.
As for the Ukrops family, well, on the positive side they do contribute to local charities.
)On the negative, they tend to stick their rather moralistic noses in other people’s stuff. Howard stern, trying to roll back elected school boards, ect.
But that is their right as citizens.
Bart pointed out, “Of course, there’s also the Ukrop’s Sucks Brigade, which seethes because Ukrop’s sells no booze, and it closes on Sunday…”
Ha ha. Yeah, the fools. Its a totally baseless argument that Ukrops would stay on top of the heap IF they sold beer like the other stores. There’s no merit to that argument whatsoever.
A&P, Pantry Pride, countless others nationwide had eventually went under—and they all sold beer!!! If selling beer is the magic bullet, then that’s all any of us would have to do & we’d all be filthy rich!
#2: Considering that Ukrops never specialized in low prices, what makes you think folks would go rush to Ukrops to buy high-priced beer? HELLO?! The thought is ridiculous on its face.
(Ps. If you saw this message posted on the RT-D story, its because I posted it.)
I don’t want Ukrops to go away. I like people bagging my stuff. But the recent history of other local-boy stores makes it clear that Ukrops will throw in the towel. But it has absolutely NOTHING to do with beer!
Get some eyeglasses, people!
