What Are the Odds?

Of another 9/11, that is? About 7 percent over the next 10 years, says one report.

Reader Comments:

Hey Bobby—Bush is no longer President. Military contractors do the work no one else in the US wants to do—the dirty work. However, I do agree that the “twin towers” of Iraq and Afganistan are not worth the effort—just like Vietnam.

The US has forgotten what war is all about and is afraid to win because it might offend someone. We never listen to the kooks that state their goal of killing all of us. Duh. Anyone been to Ft. Hood recently?

As of October, there were 833, not 4700, deaths in Afganistan.

Coincidentally, the 2 deadliest months of the 8 year war were September and October of this year. This just happens to coincide with the period wherein Obama has spent 2 months agonizing over the reinforcement request while playing basketball, golf and campaigning for democrats who would ultimately lose.

As for this report., it’s BS. There’s no way for someone to make odds in a situation wherein a few lone fanatics can cause 911 type destruction. Where there’s a will, theres a way. They have the will to kill. We don’t have the will to stop them.

Well, the “report “ starts out saying it is hard to predict such events. Then it says the chance is 7%. These guys are not inspiring much confidence in me.
And what is causing the downturn ? Personaly, I doubt it is the twin wars which seem to be killing civilians, troops and Afghan adversaries without any evidence it is stopping terrorists at home.
So, could it be improved internal security, FBI, ect ? No, we could not admit to that. That is the Clinton model
and would possibly allocate funds away from our Pentagon’s Twin Towers of Afghanistan and Iraq. Let’s face it, taking money from Halliburton, CACI, defense contractors, not giving right wing veteran organization caskets to salute is well, kind of UnAmerican. So for get the Clinton model.
I say re-write the report, up the odds to 90% (even if it is an exaggeration), just like Bush did to start the Twin Towers of the Pentagon and Military Contractor Profit Complex. Its the American way.

Thank God for Homeland Security. We should make that agency bigger & stronger, rather than weaker (as libertarians advocate). Let us not ease-up the vigorous pursuit & annihilation of terrorists.

Savor this moment. This is as right-wing as you’ll ever find me.

Please enlighten all of us as to where “modest intelligence and a good dose of common sense will provide” is to come from. US Congress? VA Legislature?

The Iraq and Afganistan police actions are similar to the Saving Private Ryan movie—-kill more people and spend more money than the original event. Apparently Vietnam taught the US NOTHING.

Round figures:
3400 deaths at WTC vs. 4400 Iraq and 4700 Afghanistan.

$8 billion damage WTC but over $100 billion total damages counting everything from aircraft to damage to the Pentagon

but still paltry vs. $1 trillion for Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hmn, I just crunched the numbers and it appears if we paid the entire population of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (about 230 million) each a ransom of $1000 a head, we would come out ahead and rest easier.

Or we could just wait 7 years and put our money on Lucky Lady in the 5th.

If these numbers sound kooky it is because they are. People do crunch numbers like that but the results are highly dubious compared to what modest intelligence and a good dose of common sense will provide.

Probably closer to 100% over the next five years. Why? Lack of border security. We really do not know who is in the country, let alone where they live. Plus, lax govt. standards by those in office and workers on the frontlines, i.e. airports, etc.
