Whistling Past Something or Other
Bart Hinkle

In Richmond today, John McCain declared he would win Virginia.

Time was, that would have gone without saying. Now, the prediction sounds “confident,” perhaps even “gutsy.”

Bad news for McCain: The more gutsy he sounds saying he’ll win here, the less likely he is to do so.

Update: For people who like numbers, here are a bunch of polling data.

Reader Comments:

Roger,

To use a Bill phrase, you have the “gall” to say I talk of nonsensical conspiracies.

Roger, I’m being totally sincere when I say you speak of nonsensical conspiracies, outright hatred, smears, personal attacks, and utter bullshit all the time. 24/7.

When you say it is your job and you are proud of it, I’m inclined to think there is a slight possibility you might be right. Not only do you invest a lot of time posting, but you seem to have a veritable encyclopedia of overtly political weblinks that you keep up with. Politics has simply got to be a big part of your life, whether job or hobby or mission in life or none of the above.

You might just be bullshitting too. Is it your job ? Not necessarily. I can’t take anything you say even at face value.

The tactic of drawing fire is not a total loss. If namecalling and dogfights are the order of the day, the blog will devolve as you say. Into flamewars. Where you are delusional is your cherished belief that if I flame you I have devolved myself.

I can not see why a reasonable person would object to anything remotely resembling high minded, or deep thinking, or Centrist. What is so bad about a little leftism either ?  Are you afraid of ideas that you don’t agree with ? I’m not sensitive to these labels. I wonder why you are. Hmn....

For the record, in case anyone at all is keeping score, “neocons, big oil, CEO’s” are not conspiracy theories.

Neocons do exist, I’m not fond of them, but that is only an opinion. It is not a conspiracy. They write white papers. They are not a secret society either, just one arm of the Republican Party.

Big oil is making windfall profits. That is not even an opinion. It is a fact. A hard fact backed up by 100% of the experts. No conspiracy.

CEO compensation is growing out of bounds and disproportionate to pay for rank and file. This is also fact. Hard fact. Easily fact checked.

You confuse me, intentionally perhaps, with all the leftist bilge you dredge up from your goofy websites.

A conspiracy would be that Big Oil is price fixing. I do not say that. I only say they get windfall profits and we should tax it.

A conspiracy would be that Bush lied about WMDs to get us into Iraq. I’ve never been a supporter of that line of thought although I notice hard facts coming out increasingly point to that being the absolute truth.  Unless proven it remains a conspiracy.

If those are not conspiracies, do I deal in them ? Probably much less than you do. We all do that occasionally because this is ground zero of the blogosphere. Are they nonsense ? No one could humanly spout more nonsense on any given day than you do yourself, Roger. I’m quite serious about that.

Fast Eddie,

Stay out of the line of fire? You don’t understand. My job is to draw your fire so you’ll give away your position.  A job I believe I’ve done rather well considering the absolute collapse of your carefully crafted internet identity as a high minded, deep thinking centrist as made obvious by your devolution into just another leftist who can’t resist lacing his comments with nonsensical conspiracies about neocons, big oil, evil CEO’s ect, ect, ect.

Just got my halo back from the cleaners.  It’s still got that one tarnish spot from the thing the other night, but let’s not dwell on that.

Are you being rational ? I think not.

Look at what you posted. Re-read it.

You like to post like a thug and then pretend you are above all reproach and a saint.

Are you saintly ? I think not.

Ed,

Any rational person, including Dennis Kucinich himself, would admit you ranted.

Any despicable leftie would argue it endlessly.

Why did our society invent people like you?  You exist to suck the lifeblood out of rational people.

Posted by Bill on 06/11 at 11:10 AM

Calm down, Roger. You are supposed to be a human being, not a troublemaker and rabblerousing antagonist.

If you cannot stay out of the line of fire and be a nice human being we will have to find another fake human being.

Posted by Ed on 06/11 at 10:21 AM

Dispicable!!!

Calm down Ed. Remember, you’re supposed to be a centrist. Stay in character or we’ll have to find another self hating leftist to be the sites make believe centrist.

Bill,

Any rational person, including Greta herself, would admit she ranted.

Any despicable lawyer would argue it endlessly.

Why did our society invent people like you ? You exist to suck the lifeblood out of real people.

Bacon’s Biscuit -

Nice rant.

Posted by Bill on 06/10 at 10:27 PM

That was a “slight conservative-leaning belief” ??? Good Lord. If so, I would hate to see a diehard far-rightwing version.

It was a rant because pretty much half the entire content of the post was railing against the perceived failings of leftists, several mentioned in particular.

The meat was in environmental comments, but even that was all over the place, from commentary on ANWR to sequestering carbon. I don’t see how that relates to Bart’s original topic but it seems like a good topic all the same.

How to address all that ? Maybe pick one little piece, because the comments were all over the place. Yes, there is huge hypocrisy in global warming. The Europeans have not lived up to Kyoto. The Chinese are in an energy grab. Does that imply Gore was wrong ? Not necessarily. Does that make wind and solar wrong ? Absolutely not.

Does it make McCain worse than Obama on the environment ? Not necessarily. Does it make Bush’s track record - oh let’s not go there.....

I can’t be much more specific than that because to me, the post pretty much read like a rant, an expression of frustration with supposed if not real obstacles to progress hypothetically engendered by liberals. Cosmo sipping NY Times reading liberals who understand nothing if we are believe Greta with no skepticism or wonderment at her motives.

And you want me to take this seriously. I did. It was a decent rant. Nothing else. It worked well as an impassioned expression of frustration with all those misguided liberal dolts who don’t understand our fearless leader and his wonderful, helpful, but misunderstood oil baron buddies.

Passion is good.
